The Snowbirds, officially known as the 431 Air Demonstration Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force, are Canada’s top military flight demonstration team. They are based at 15 Wing Moose Jaw in Saskatchewan and perform exciting routines at airshows across Canada and the United States. The team is known for their strong teamwork, precise flying, and the pride they bring to Canadian aviation. The name “Snowbirds” was chosen in 1971 through a contest held for local elementary school students. The winning name reflected the red‑and‑white colours of their aircraft and the smooth, graceful way the team flies. Their first official performance as the Snowbirds took place on July 11, 1971, at the Homecoming Air Show in Moose Jaw.
The Snowbirds fly the CT‑114 Tutor, a Canadian‑designed jet trainer that served the Air Force for many years. The Tutor is small, stable, and easy to control, which makes it perfect for the close‑formation flying the team is famous for. Its bright red‑and‑white paint scheme makes the aircraft easy to spot during their shows. The Snowbirds usually fly with nine aircraft, which is one of the largest formations used by any demonstration team. Their routines include well‑known maneuvers such as the Canada Burst, the Heart, the Downward Bomb Burst, solo head‑on crosses, and the nine‑abreast exit. Each maneuver shows the pilots’ discipline, coordination, and commitment to excellence.
Beyond their performances, the Snowbirds serve as ambassadors for the Royal Canadian Air Force. They encourage young people to explore aviation careers, honour Canada’s flying history, and represent values like teamwork, professionalism, and national pride. Their shows continue to be some of the most popular and memorable highlights at airshows across North America.
